Before a Natural Dog Chew Reaches the Shelf: What Should a Buyer Verify?
Before a Natural Dog Chew Reaches the Shelf: What Should a Buyer Verify?
Natural dog chews can look good, fit the category and have a convincing story. But before it reaches the shelf, buyers need more than a good-looking product and a supplier saying, “No problem.”
They need clear answers.
For importers, distributors, retailers and private-label businesses, checking the details before placing an order can save time, prevent misunderstandings and make the difference between a smooth purchase and an avoidable headache.
Here are five things worth checking before saying yes.
1. Know exactly what you’re buying
“Natural dog chews” is a category, not a product specification.
What product is it? Which format? What size range? What are its relevant characteristics? If you are buying deer antlers, for example, are you looking at whole or split antlers? Which species and formats are actually available?
The more specific the product description, the less room there is for surprises.
If the product is described differently in the catalogue, quotation and order confirmation, stop and clarify. Now is the time — not when the shipment arrives.
2. Get the specifications straight
Natural materials are not factory-made plastic parts. Variation can be part of the product. That doesn’t mean specifications should be vague.
Buyers should establish which characteristics are defined, which can naturally vary and how the product will be described commercially.
Depending on the product, relevant details may include size, weight, format and the agreed product range.
The key question is simple: Are both sides agreeing to the same thing?
If the answer depends on what someone meant in an email three weeks ago, it’s not clear enough.
3. Check the documentation — not just the sales pitch
A product description is useful. Supporting documentation is better.
Before ordering, establish what product information and documentation the supplier can provide, and what is required for your destination market and intended sales channel.
Requirements can differ by product and market, so don’t assume that one set of documents covers every situation.
Ask specific questions. Request the relevant information. If something is missing or unclear, resolve it before committing.
“Natural” is not a substitute for documentation.
4. Make sure the packaging and labelling fit the job
Packaging has to do more than look good in a product photo.
Will the product be sold loose, in bulk, under your own brand or in retail-ready packaging? What information needs to appear on the pack? Who is responsible for providing and approving it?
These details affect how a product moves from supplier to buyer to shelf.
Don’t leave packaging decisions until the last minute. Agree on the format, responsibilities and requirements early — especially when private-label work is involved.
5. Pay attention to how the supplier answers
You don’t need a supplier who makes everything sound perfect. You need one who gives clear answers.
Can they explain the product? Are the specifications consistent? Do they tell you what information is available? Can they distinguish between what is confirmed and what still needs checking?
A straightforward answer is more useful than a confident promise that later needs explaining.
And if a detail hasn’t been confirmed yet, it’s better to know that before placing the order.
The final check: are you ready to approve the product?
Before moving forward, make sure you can answer these five questions:
- Do we know exactly which product and format we are buying?
- Have we agreed on the relevant specifications and acceptable natural variation?
- Have we checked the documentation needed for our product and destination market?
- Are the packaging, labelling and responsibilities clear?
- Have all important questions been answered or clearly identified as outstanding?
If not, don’t panic. Just get the answers before the order moves forward.
